I graduated from WMU in 1973 and joined the Navy. I received my wings and completed 10 years active duty. I met and married my wife, Shirley, 39 years ago in New Orleans, while on active duty. I stayed in the Naval Reserve another 11 plus years before I retired with a total of 21 years of service with the rank of Commander. After active duty, I worked for Texas Instruments / Raytheon Company in the Dallas area on many defence programs. The most notable was the F-117 Steath Fighter and the F/A-18 Super Hornet. It was hard for me, but I retired in September of 2017 with 33 years of service. We have one daughter, Erin, an aerospace engineer who lives in Jupiter, Florida, with her husband Joe. We have lived in Plano, Texas since 1984.

I like to SCUBA, kayak, fish, and go to my cabin in the UP. My wife and I have travelled 6 times to Europe and also cruised to both coasts of Mexico.

Connie VanSchelven
After teaching for 33 years in the Grand Haven System (29 of those at the high school). I retired in 2008.  I was not ready to retire, but I was fed up with the US Dept of Ed's interference controlling what had to be taught and how.  After retirement, I worked for the MI DNR at Grand Haven State Park as a state worker.  My summers and falls were spent dealing in public relations..."Why can't I get a site here...He's here all summer long...How does he beat the system?"  If I could have figured that one out, I would be a wealthy women!  The months of October - April were pretty boring, so I subbed in the offices at the high school.. After 33 years in the classroom, I did not want to spoil those memories by subbing in a classroom.  Next, I worked 1/2 time in the attendance office and then moved to 1/2 time in student services.  The last two years my position has been that of Test Coordinator for GHHS.  This means I am in total control of all of the standardized testing.  Remember those ACT, SAT, PSAT tests we took?  Remember Fleda Nevins?  Well, that's me!  I am the "Test Nazi."  :-)

Not to be bored, I was the faculty representative on the building committee at 17001 Ferris; I arranged the physical move from 900 South Cutler out to the township.  You know what furniture and boxes go into which semi and when do the semis arrive and where do they park?  I also ordered all of the new furniture in the building to supplement that which we took with us.

I have worked on numerous teams to create curriculum in English classes, some of which is still used throughout the US.

For about 10 years (while teaching) I served as the office manager during the summer months and year-round treasurer of the Coast Guard Festival.  My new venture is that of a Trustee for the GH Eagles Auxiliary.  I just can't sit still.

I have shared the old family home on Duncan Court with many four-legged fur babies.  Currently I am "mom" to Elwood Hopsworth (a 3 year old Zuchon who is smarter than I) and Minnie Van (a 2 year old Silver Cocker Spaniel...every bit a blonde).

I am having a great time right now putting my "all" into our 50th reunion.  We have a great committee who are dedicated to putting together a fun filled weekend beginning July 27, 2018.  Looking forward to seeing you next July!

I scored the highest in my class so was transferred to OCS (officers candidate school) I was assigned to the Intelligence branch for 6 years, traveled the world & rose to the rank of O3 (Lieutenant) after which I resigned and went into the insurance claims business.

I moved to the San Francisco/San Jose area and worked for AAA in their Special Investgation Unit (fraud) for 25 years. Retired for a year then went to work for GEICO heading up their fraud department in Northern California. Finally retired for the second time after 10 years.
